A daemon is a psychological manifestation of a person's “soul” or inner self, most commonly expressed in the form of an animal. The concept gained popularity after the novel and movie adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, and a community soon formed around the idea that one could make their own daemons.

While a daemon can be seen as something akin to a median configuration, a daemon is usually not considered a systemmate.

The Concept

A daemon is considered to be a representation of a person's personality traits in the form of an animal. Most who immerse themselves in the daemon community focus on finding an animal that represents their personality, and then bringing it to life through mental visualization. Unlike the novel and movies, daemons are not a physical manifestation, but instead seen mentally and personally through imposition.
